I checked Strong's for a definition:

H1288
בּרך
bârak
baw-rak'
A primitive root; to kneel; by implication to bless God (as an act of adoration), and (vice-versa) man (as a benefit); also (by euphemism) to curse (God or the king, as treason): - X abundantly, X altogether, X at all, blaspheme, bless, congratulate, curse, X greatly, X indeed, kneel (down), praise, salute, X still, thank.

Oftentimes, Hebrew words have several layers of meanings, and the true meaning is dependent on the context.

In this case, I believe that Job's wife is angry with God but at the same time terrified of God because of the disasters which befell them, so instead of directly using the proper term for "curse" (qâbab H6895), she deliberately used an euphemism to avoid incurring punishment upon herself.

Shalom,
StanleyStanley Wonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14714965246685825942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9053305825078372051.post-25166628500721539022013-07-31T10:51:22.655+08:002013-07-31T10:51:22.655+08:00Shalom!
I found this observation (about Job's...Shalom!

I found this observation (about Job's wife) interesting - especially since i've been reading the account in Genesis recently.

I did some further reading and found that the word 'cursed' used is this book (1:5, 1:11, 2:5, 2:9) is actually 'barakh' - in Hebrew it means 'bless'. The YLT also translates it so (i.e. 2:9): "Still thou art keeping hold on thine integrity: bless God and die."

Other interesting observations: When God told Job to make restoration for his friends for their words - his wife was not included as one of those who needed to be restored.

Anyway, looking forward to your part 2!

Highly favored,
SamuelParodyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11545200145517490390noreply@blogger.com
